ASTW Invites Host Destinations for 2026/27 Convention and Awards Gala

Australian Society of Travel Writers

The Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW) invites tourism boards and destination marketing organisations to partner in hosting its flagship annual event: the ASTW Convention and Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner.

Renowned for delivering a powerful and enduring editorial boost, the convention gathers Australia and New Zealand's leading travel writers, editors, digital storytellers, photographers and PR professionals for several days of learning and professional development, networking, exploration and celebration.

Following the highly successful 2025 event in Bendigo, regional Victoria – which welcomed more than 65 members plus guests and generated almost 140 room nights as part of the official program – ASTW is now seeking host destinations for its 2026 and 2027 conventions.

For host regions, it is a rare opportunity to showcase their destination – its people, places and experiences – to the very storytellers whose work inspires travellers around the world.

“When you host an ASTW Convention, you're not just partnering on an event – you're inviting professional storytellers to fully immerse themselves in your destination,” says ASTW president Chris Ashton. “To meet the characters, uncover the remarkable stories and to share them with readers, viewers and listeners across the globe.”

The core program features a curated mix of thought-provoking seminars and workshops, networking and social events, culminating in the prestigious Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner, attended by delegates and visiting award sponsors.

In addition to the main event, optional pre- and post-convention familiarisation activities – developed in partnership with the host region – enable select delegates to experience the full breadth of the destination, from heritage, nature, and culture to food, wine and everything in between.

By hosting the ASTW Convention and Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner, destinations gain more than short-term exposure – they create meaningful connections with the storytellers who shape how Australians, Kiwis and global travellers see the world. For destinations ready to step into the spotlight, this is a chance to spark curiosity, build advocacy and ensure their stories continue to be told long after the final farewell.
